FEASIBILITY STUDIES

Is your money working for you?

Not all ideas are equal. Technical and financial feasibility studies assess investment opportunities in terms of IRR, NPV and ROI metrics.

Technical Feasiblity Studies

Technical Feasibility Studies evaluate different technical means of accomplishing the desired objective (e.g. Irrigate 1 000 ha).
Different technical options may look at:

  • Different water sources
  • Pipe routes
  • Optimum pipe sizes
  • Water storage options
  • Irrigation types
  • Irrigation layouts

Financial Feasibility Studies

Financial Feasibility Studies are a direct follow-on from the technical study.
The technical options are evaluated with respect to:

  • Improvement over status quo
  • Capital Cost - once off construction cost
  • Operating Cost - ongoing, continuous cost of operation
  • Potential opportunity costs

The technical and financial feasibility studies culminate in the costs and benefits being quantified in terms of universally recognised metrics such as Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Net Present Value (NPV) and Return on Investment (ROI), to form a bankable feasibility study.

MASTERPLANS

Plan for the future

Development masterplans build on the outcomes of technical and financial feasibility studies to develop the long-term vision for your operation and the pathway to achieve this.
We focus on ensuring that framework is in place to ensure that development happens in the right sequence, in a way that minimizes cost. We support clients with masterplans for both comprehensive agricultural developments and municipal water schemes.

INFIELD IRRIGATION DESIGN

Putting water onto your land

Farming is often a low-margin game, with the outcome heavily influenced by the systems in place. Correctly designed infield irrigation is critical to your success. We design industry-leading irrigation systems that are focussed on minimizing operating cost while being appropriate for the situation. Our expertise includes:

  • Drip irrigation systems, for both intensive crops (orchards) and extensive crops (e.g. sugar).
  • Center pivot systems.
  • Micro sprinkler systems.
  • Pumpstations, filtration and fertigation systems.

We are supplier independent and are able to recommend the best fit components for your situation. We strongly believe in situation-appropriate design, and in matching the system complexity to management capability for the best overall results.

IRRIGATION UPGRADES

Upgrade your system

Is your irrigation system suffering from low pressure issues, not applying enough water or bursting pipes? We offer specialised irrigation system assessment and upgrades that focus on upgrading critical components while re-using all functional infrastructure. We provide irrigation system upgrade design services, including:

  • Pump assessment
  • System pipe and condition assessment
  • Flow rate increases (i.e. rolling out extra dripperline)
  • Effective solutions to system pressure issues

Irrigation systems often have a long life of tweaks and changes, often eventually resulting in an arrangement that is not hydraulically ideal. We work with you to make your system the best it can be to meet your current needs.

troubleshooting

Targeted, cost-effective interventions

When complex municipal and agricultural water supply systems fail due to pipes bursting or reservoirs running dry, the solutions are often not obvious. We offer systems analysis focusing on the interactions between:

  • Pump capacities
  • Pipe and canal sizes
  • Reservoir sizes
  • Water hammer analysis

By using specialised pressure monitoring equipment and analysis software we are able to pinpoint issues. We work with you to get failing systems back on their feet by targeting the critical system components causing issues.

A decrepit pumpstation
bulk water supply

Getting your water to the field

Bulk water conveyance from source to scheme edge is a critical component of many irrigation and municipal supply schemes. We design robust bulk water systems, including:

  • Pipelines,
  • Pump stations
  • Balancing dams
  • Canals

Energy cost is the primary cost-driver of any pumped water system; all our system designs are focussed on finding the best balance between up-front (capital) cost and long-term (operating) cost, as typically the cheapest system to put in is the most expensive to operate.
